By now I’m sure the NFL has recognized what a hard-nosed player Eagles defensive lineman Cedric Thornton is. But the average football fans around the league that reside outside of Philadelphia probably have no idea of who he is. So who is Cedric Thornton?
Well any true Eagles fan knows him as one of the team’s most consistent players on defense. When Ced lines up he has one thing on his mind, “Focus on the man in front of you.” Swamp makes sure he does his job on Sundays. He knows if he takes care of his assignment, his teammates will take care of theirs. “Rely on other guys to do their job.” Success comes to those players who go out and give their all. Hard work pays off, and Thornton is being rewarded. He is a player who understands his role on the team, and his assignments on the field.
During his weekly radio show on Sports Radio 94.1 WIP, Eagles GM Howie Roseman stated, “When we signed Cedric as an undrafted free agent I was enthusiastic about it, he’s a guy we were targeting in the draft.” Thornton ranks 5th on the Eagles with 63 tackles, yet has the most among the defensive line. Pretty good stats, but a stat sheet will never explain what Thornton means to this team. He does all the little things needed to win a football game. Eagles coach Chip Kelly asserted, “He always seems to be around the ball no matter if it is a run or a pass.” Kelly understands the impact Thornton has had on the team.
Cedric Thornton is of vital importance to the Eagles. He is maturing week by week. It’s a shame his name is not well known by other football fans outside of Philadelphia. This man deserves to go to Hawaii; he deserves a trip to the Pro Bowl. According to Pro Football Focus, Thornton is the third-best 3-4 DE against the run with a grade of 22.0, behind only Houston’s J.J. Watt and the Jets’ Sheldon Richardson. Vote for Cedric! Eagles fans need to get this guy to the Pro Bowl, maybe him and punter Donnie Jones can sit together on the flight.
