In many ways, the Philadelphia Flyers turned in their best sixty minute effort Monday night as they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in another must win game, 4-2. Water eventually found its level tonight as Tampa gained an early lead but they were hardly the better team. The Flyers pelted Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy with shot after shot and finished the night with 39 shots on goal. Philadelphia now has pulled within just two points of the final playoff spot in the east with 17 games to go.
The Flyers received goals from Shayne Gostisbehere (13th, 14th), Brayden Schenn (22nd) and Wayne Simmonds (24th) in the win. Claude Giroux added 2 assists to the winning cause as well and gave the Flyers that added boost in yet another game that they needed to have. Everyone contributed tonight; if one line wasn’t on the scoresheet, they provided the Flyers with a yeoman’s like work ethic throughout and that ultimately decided this one. Philadelphia truly played a sound and structured team game tonight and they deservedly walked away two points richer.
Winning goaltender Steve Mason stopped 16 of 18 pucks fired his way. The win gave Mason his 15th win of the season and while he wasn’t overwhelmed with shots and scoring chances, he was sharp when needed to be.
Here is your game notable:
Shayne Ghostisbehere and Claude Giroux have linked up to give the Flyers one of the league’s deadliest duos. Ghost has accumulated all of the accolades since being called up but I don’t believe that it’s been all Ghostisbehere. Coach Dave Hakstol deserves credit for allowing Ghost to do what he does best and Claude Giroux deserves credit for feeding this kid every opportunity he gets. I doubt the team minds Ghost getting the attention as he undoubtedly deserves it in his record-breaking rookie season but at the same time, it’s duly important to remember that the team around is helping a great deal along the way.
