Phillies skipper Joe Girardi was on the WIP Morning show today live from Clearwater with Angelo Cataldi and the gang.
During the interview, Angelo asked Girardi who his closer will be this upcoming season. Girardi responded with, “oh, Hector… Hector Neris is our closer.”
The Phillies manager also talked about Seranthony Domínguez and his progression, with him being available at times down the line, but Hector Neris is without a doubt is his closer.
Say what you want about Hector Neris, but he actually had a pretty decent year last year and is a better pitcher than people give him credit for.
Neris’ pitching stats as a closer rank him as an above average closer ranging anywhere from the 7th-13th range in respected categories. He also faced the 6th most high leverage first plate appearance situations in the MLB last season. He’s a guy who can get it done under pressure. Does Hector give up the occasional home run from time to time that you hate to see come from the closer role? Sure. Yet majority of the time he does his job and with a better defense behind him in 2020, that should help his case even more.
